LEGO Chemistry

LEGO Chemistry

Project Summary

We built a device to add a dry chemical to a liquid, shake the solution, and then measure the temperature.

Project Description

This is meant to show the NXT simulating the addition of a dry chemical to a liquid, shaking the beaker to mix the solution, and then measuring the temperature. First the apparatus grips the small beaker. It then rotates the beaker to the left and as it does, it knocks the yellow pellet (simulated chemical pellet) into the liquid. It then rotates the beaker to the right and then back and forth to mix the solution. After mixing, it rotates the beaker to the right and inserts a modified version of the Vernier Stainless Steel Temperature Probe into the solution. The program emits a sound, the frequency of which is set to match the raw count from the thermistor temperature sensor. The raw count goes down as the temperature goes up. In this case we had slightly warm water in the beaker, so you hear the frequency go down. The beaker is returned to the original spot and released.
